A workshop dedicated to strengthening biosecurity and implementing the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in Portuguese-speaking African countries was held from May 27 to 29 at the Portuguese Pavilion in Lisbon. Part of the SIMBA-Luso project, the event brought together experts from civil, academic and military institutions in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as representatives from international organizations.
The program covered topics such as biological risk management, the effects of climate change, CBRN disinformation, laboratory infrastructure planning and professional certification. Portuguese-language tools were also presented, such as the SIMBA-Luso website, the Epi Intel platform and the Portuguese version of the WHO's RAST tool.
The initiative promoted multisectoral cooperation, technical training and alignment with international standards, reinforcing biosafety in the African Lusophone space.
