UN celebrates 50 years of the Biological Weapons Convention

In March 2025, the United Nations (UN) celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), a fundamental international treaty that prohibits the development, production and possession of biological weapons. The celebration highlights the progress made in promoting global peace and security, reinforcing the commitment of signatory countries to prevent the use of biological agents for war purposes. The BWC remains an essential pillar in the disarmament and biosafety regime, promoting multilateral cooperation, transparency and the implementation of effective national measures. The UN reaffirms the importance of strengthening monitoring mechanisms and technical support to countries, especially in vulnerable regions such as Portuguese-speaking African countries.
